Here at Enchanted we use a number of different materials to create our faerie figurines and sculptures. Here is an explanation of the different material types which are used.
Cold Cast Bronze
Cold Cast Bronze is a phrase used to describe a casting technique in which bronze powder is suspended in a resin mix. This is then poured into a silicon mould within a fibreglass jacket. Following a chemical reaction the statue sets. Often a statue is cast in many pieces, these are then bonded together using a bronze resin mix. The statue is then de-seamed, re-worked where necessary and then sanded and wire wooled to bring out the luster of the bronze.
At this point it can be patinated. During pationation we often use a blend of two colours which are applied separately, being distressed and sealed in between layers. Finally a lair of green wax is applied and then partially removed as per the customers requirements, then sealed again.
That in a nutshell is the process involved. The Cold Cast Bronze technique is used to make all of our Limited Edition Range available here on the Enchanted web site. However, Lost Wax Bronze versions of all pieces can be made to order.
As to the unique faerie wings, well that's a faerie secret! .....
Lost Wax Bronze
Lost Wax Bronze is the same process up to the manufacture of the mould. At this point we cast a wax master. This is then (depending on size) put in a cage with risers (wax straws) and dipped in ceramic slurry. This is repeated time after time - eventually a cocoon surrounds the statue. This is then fired in a kiln, the wax melts and runs out, hence "lost wax".
The mould, having been fired is ready for the bronze. This is molten metal and is poured into the mould. The network of pipes within the mould (called risers) created by the wax straws enables the air to escape to ensure a good casting.
When cool the mould is vibrated away and a statue is revealed. This is just the beginning, for next comes the welding, plenishing, patinating etc. Every time you want to cast a statue by this method a different mould and wax statue has to be made.
We are able to offer all sculptures in our Faerie Range as Lost Wax Bronze pieces, also in limited editions. Please contact us for further details, including pricing.
Resin Statues and Gel Coats
Resin statues are manufactured in a similar way, but contain no bronze. The have a paint effect to suggest bronze. Our Woodland Faeries and Classic Collection ranges are resin statues, but we have given them a gel coat (thin layer of bronze resin) which sets them apart from similar priced figurines on the market. We also make them heavy as this makes them sturdy and a joy to hold.
We hope this gives you a little insight into what goes in to making your Enchanted Faeries.
